Hobgoblins

(replaces gnomes)

Primordant hobgoblins, called alternately ‘hobs’ (as a friendly nomenclature for the population on the north of Ait) and ‘goblins’ (strictly insulting and reserved for the totalitarian society originating on the southern portion of Ait) are a swarthy and cunning population with historical skills in building, animal husbandry, farming, and sea-faring. The last few centuries have seen them diverge from their common origination with one group adapting a more chaotic, benevolent structure seeking to solidify their extensive networks of trade with other human and humanoid races, while the other has turned more insular with a strict lawful dictatorship fearful of losing their hegemony and distrustful of outsiders.

For hobs, their upbringing and natures contribute to their chaotic tendencies, with both might, guile, and inventiveness being rewarded in their society equally. Where some hobs may succeed with their fists, they will depend upon skill at arms, speed, and the art of the feint rather than overwhelming force. Where others gain favor with stealth and craftiness, the hobgoblin incorporates their understanding of structure to gain advantages, whether in the marketplace or the boxing ring. And while some peoples find prominence through their artistic skill and inventive crafting and teaching, the hob knows to intimidate and obfuscate for advantages where possible.

Goblins, in turn, are ruthless, strict, and grim, their society turning to militaristic pride and propoganda. They have sealed their borders, and an ill-advised military action against the Gathelik isles has even had them destroy all of their forests to prevent retaliatory incursions by the fey population there. With borders sealed, and diplomatic ties all but severed everywhere, they have expanded down into the underdark, taking over areas beneath the island in an attempt to find suitable expansion areas for their growing population.

All hobgoblins are medium sized, averaging from five and half feet to six feet fully grown. Their life span is usually sixty to eighty years. They are brown and copper complexions, lean muscle and bone structures, with oval heads and eyes. Wide nostrils and flaring or pointed ears are common. Hair and eyes are brown and black
